Postman Pat

The Postman Pat brand is derived from the long-running children’s TV show.

Writer John Cunliffe and co-creator Ivor Wood, through his Woodland Animations company, produced the first 13 original episodes of Postman Pat for BBC television in 1981.

Needless to say, the stop-motion animations of fictional Greendale postman Pat Clifton proved a big hit with pre-school children. Also much loved is Pat’s black and white cat Jess who invariably accompanies him in Pat 1, his red post van, as he does his delivery rounds. Arguably Jess the cat is actually the real star of the show, and undoubtedly the source of much of the humour. Quite right then that Jess now features in his own spin-off series Guess With Jess.

Viewers will be familiar with Pat’s supporting cast of characters including his wife and son Sara and Julian, postmistress Mrs Goggins, farmer Alf Thomson, stationmaster Ajay Baines and local trader Ted Glen.

Series two of Postman Pat was aired in 1996 also by Woodland Animations. From 2004 Cosgrove Hall produced an updated version of Postman Pat.

In 2008 Entertainment Rights in conjunction with Cosgrove Hall produced the brand new Postman Pat Special Delivery Service (SDS).

In the new SDS series, though Pat is the Head of the Special Delivery Service he works under the supervision of SDS boss, Ben. Pat now has new SDS delivery vehicles including a motorbike and helicopter.

Today the Postman Pat brand is bigger than ever before with an ever-expanding range of licensed merchandise including books, games, dvds, apparel and of course toys.

In 2007 Character Options were awarded the master toy license to produce Postman Pat toys, playsets, plush and collectables. The first Character SDS Postman Pat toys were released in 2009.

In 2009 the Postman Pat brand was sold to private equity firm GTCR.

In July 2012, as part of the portfolio of Classic Media, Postman Pat was forwarded on to US giant Dreamworks Animation LLC.
